It doesn’t make sense that it would help them. The things affected by the shutdown are not priorities for Republican voters:

2. Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.  
3. National Archives research rooms and exhibits.  
4. Many HUD offices, including those handling routine administrative work.  
5. Most FCC operations, including processing broadcast licenses, permits, and equipment authorizations. Complaint hotlines and consumer services (like robocall reporting) are also shut down.  
6. Federal agencies like NIH, NSF, and the Department of Education cannot issue new grant awards.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here, but here's my understanding. And I'm going to make it as simple as possible, and I know there's edge cases - but those are edge cases and not the majority.

I'm trying to understand the justification from the republicans on how exactly  "the democrats are trying to give illegals healthcare", when.. that's not at all what they are asking for. 'Illegals' can't get medicare / medicaid, unless it's a non-federal, state only solution. Any they keep showing states with those, and... claiming it's federal when it isn't.
 
So it all comes down to is ER visits.

When you go to the ER, the hospital has to treat you SO YOU DON'T BLEED OUT IN THE LOBBY. If you are uninsured or unable to pay, the hospital can request some payment from the government to cover it. Once in a while, that uninsured person in the ER might be an 'illegal'. And in the republican mind, that one in a thousand people being 'illegal' means the entire program needs to be killed. 

That funding is what they cut in the Bill a few month back, and what the 'dems' are demanding be reinstated.

There's two options. Either the program is killed and ALL uninsured people are denied service, left to die in the lobby, or we continue funding it.. even if one in a thousand people turn out to be an 'illegal'. There is no third option in our existing system.

And this is why the government is shut down.

Military personnel will continue in a normal duty status without pay until such time as a continuing resolution or appropriations are passed by Congress and signed into law. Hopefully I'm wrong but The rumors around DC and coming out of the White House are 20 to 30 days. 

I know they're talking about pushing through a pay the troops bill like they've done during other shutdowns but it may not have the votes. 
The military is not as protected as it has been historically. Normally it's very bad optics not to pay troops but trust in the military is in an all-time low at Vietnam levels. 
That has less to do with us and more to do with the powers that be. So it's not as unpopular to pay the military as it used to be.

Wouldn't believe me till he talked to the head of our military division (we also have programs with job Corp and some prisons) because I was a NCO at one time and all we do is lie. The head of our military division was the navy's equivalent of a CSM.
